Let’s talk about after baby key pieces. But I’m not talking about the baby. I’m talking more about you. Items that prep you for this crazy wild new ride. That kid is coming whether you are ready or not so lets get shopping. I will say, how crazy it is that these products are constantly being updated and improved leaving us to purchase them all over again when the next kid comes around. Then again, if you have the budget to renew some of these key pieces, it can definitely boost your mood when the 9 month prego thing is getting ya down. Just remember this list is less about “stuff for baby” and more about you…. as a mom.
First off a newborn baby typically sleeps a lot. At least ours do. So when they fall asleep in the car seat you need a good cover to block out the light. This multi functional product from Milk Snob functions as car seat cover, nursing cover, and grocery cart cover. It comes in a variety of fun patterns for $34. I would use it mainly as a car seat cover because I love the peek a boo slit around the handle that lets you to check on the babe and how tightly it fits around the seat without budging.
Clockwise from L to R: Skip Hop Convertible Diaper Bag; Moskka Diaper Backpack; BABYMEL Robyn Convertible Diaper Backpack; Oh Joy! Diaper Backpack. After two kids I have learned to try something new with my diaper bag situation on the third. Definitely going the backpack route. Gone are the days of the bag falling of my shoulder or carrying it on one side and holding the babe on the other side in some sort of awkward balancing act. Some of the bags can be converted into a cross body bag but all of them have great features and plenty of space for all of your mama/baby needs.
Nap times aren’t just for the baby. I highly highly recommend some good rest time while the baby naps. Although newborns sleeping patterns are totally inconsistent and in random intervals, you need to take the time to rest when the baby does. This is a time to also take care of yourself because if you aren’t physically or mentally in check, it makes it hard to be present and in the moment with your little one. You will become drained and exhausted from the lack of sleep for those times they wake up at night because there is no crazier time then the few weeks after that baby comes. If you have other children at home and need to relax, then pop in a movie and settle down for a bit to recharge. I love to nap during these times when I get the chance and always wake up refreshed if I have been stressed and spent of energy.
What to wear
Clockwise from L to R: Amazon Maxi Dress with Draw String; Shein Tie Dye Print Maxi; Target Petal Pink Maxi Dress; Shop Stevie Elle Denim Dress. It’s pretty incredible and shocking to experience the changes of a pregnant body. There are days after I have had a baby when I am a happy confident new mom, embracing this body. Then there are days when I can’t wait to get back to the gym to salvage what’s left of me before it was all stretched out. Sometimes just throwing something on that is comfy and perrrtty does the trick. I like to stick to cozy, ready to wear, nursing friendly, dresses after I have a baby. Pieces that are perfect around the house and going out and about.
It is so easy to become housebound with a newborn baby and feel shut in but to that I say DON’T. Obviously take some time to be with your little one and relax when you can but if there are opportunities for you to escape for a bit to maintain “me” time, do it. And if your “me” time is shopping, running errands, going out to dinner with a friend, exercising, ect. then make that your goal. I have a husband who has always been supportive and helpful with these things so it definitely helps to have a partner or someone you can reach out to. But if you don’t, bring the babe along to these things because it’s still totally worth it. Especially if planned around their nap time.
I can’t stress enough the importance of a good nursing bra. When I am pregnant I fling that bra off as soon as possible at home but when I am nursing I feel so top heavy that I end up practically sleeping in my bra most nights for a while. You need something that is comfortable like most things you put on your body after a baby. This HOFISH seamless nursing bra on Amazon is VERY highly rated and with over 2000 reviews. But if this one doesn’t spark your interest, check places like Target or Pea in the Pod for a different shape or fit. Everyone’s bodies are different so you do you!
